Short description of the thesis

This thesis investigates how complex metal oxides form and how their atomic structures can be controlled. These materials, containing five different metals, have the potential to contribute to more sustainable technologies for energy conversion and storage. By combining several X-ray techniques at synchrotron facilities, the structure of the materials is characterised as they form at high temperatures. The data show that the oxides pass through an intermediate structure before crystallising into a final spinel structure. Within this structure, some metals have strong preferences for particular atomic sites, while others are more flexible. Understanding these preferences can provide greater control over the final oxide structure and guide the design of new oxide materials.
