Short description of the thesis
Gluons hold quarks together inside protons and neutrons. FoCal, a new detector for CERN’s ALICE experiment, will help investigate how gluons behave at very high densities. My PhD focused on developing software, electronics, and calibration procedures for the readout system of FoCal’s hadronic calorimeter, which measures the energy of particles produced in collisions. Tests with particle beams at CERN brought a detector prototype, its electronics, and the software together in a working system. They showed how well the prototype measures particle energies and provided the experience needed to prepare the full detector.
