Short description of the thesis
The extreme natural laboratories associated with the formation-sites of black holes are increasingly coming into view. These include the heavy-element debris from neutron-star mergers and the dense gas enshrouding early supermassive black holes, the so-called ‘Little Red Dots’ discovered with the James Webb Space Telescope. This thesis develops and applies physical frameworks to combined these new observations with radiative transfer modelling. In doing so, it shows how new observations can illuminate the physics near the genesis of black holes, from stellar-mass remnants formed in cosmic collisions to supermassive black holes emerging in the early Universe.
