Recruitment grants and start packages for experienced researchers

Start packages

The Novo Nordisk Foundation and Danish National Research Foundation are offering start packages that take up the universities' own recruitment processes and cannot be applied until after they have been offered a position.

 

 

 

 

 

Target group:  Tenure-Track Assistant Professors, Associate professors and professors.
Mobility requirement: Applicants must be recruited from abroad or from other institutions in Denmark and must not have their main employment at the host institution for more than 12 months within the last three years. If the applicant moves from another Danish university, it must be because of a promotion, i.e. from associate professor to professor.
Academic delimitation: Biomedicine, biotechnology as well as natural science and technical sciences. 
Grant: 6 million DKK for associate professors and 8 million DKK for professors.
Application deadlines: Deadlines on a quarterly basis (January, April, August and October in 2022).
Processing time: One month.
Internal process at UCPH: The application must be approved by the department and submitted by the associate dean for research.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Target group: Professors.
Mobility requirement: Applicants must be recruited from abroad and must not have been employees for more than 6 months at the application time.
Academic delimitation: All scientific areas.
Grant: 5-10 million DKK over three years.
Application deadlines: March, June and November.
Processing time: One month.
Internal process at UCPH: Applicants must be prioritized internally at UCPH, because the university may only submit one application for each round.

 

 

 

 

 

Grants for international recruitment

The Novo Nordisk Foundation has two initiatives in which researchers abroad can apply. There is a mobility requirement, but no requirements regarding nationality. The grants can be used to cover the applicant's salary. 

 

 

 

 

 

Target group: Laureate Research Grants are targeted researchers with more than seven years of experience as research group manager.
Mobility requirement: The candidate must be employed outside of Denmark during the application process.
Academic delimitation:
 Biomedicine or biotechnology. The biotechnological research can be related to medical and/or non-medical application of the technology.
Grant: 50 million DKK over seven years with the opportunity of an extension for 35 million DKK.
Application deadlines: August.
Processing time: about seven months.
Internal process at UCPH:
 To be agreed and approved by the Head of Department in phase 1.

Target group: NNF Young Investigator Awards is targeted the recruitment of researchers with up to seven years of experience as manager of a research group.  
Mobility requirement: The candidate must be employed outside of Denmark during the application process.
Academic delimitation: Biomedicine or biotechnology. The biotechnological research can be related to medical and/or non-medical application of the technology.
Grant: 25 million DKK over seven years.
Application deadlines: August.
Processing time: about seven months.
Internal process at UCPH: To be agreed and approved by the Head of Department.

Target group: RECRUIT is targeted the recruitment of experienced researchers at different career levels.
Mobility requirement: The candidate must not have been employed or conducted research at a Danish university for more than 12 months out of the last 48 months.
Academic delimitation: Natural science with potential application in health sciences and industrial biotechnology (specified in the call).
Grant: 15 million for assistant professor/ 25 million DKK for associate professors respectively 35 million DKK for /professors during seven years.
Application deadline: September.
Processing time: Answer in April, project start within a year.
Internal process at UCPH: The University of Copenhagen must submit applications for a maximum of 100 million DKK and there will therefore be an internal prioritization. Contact the deputy head of Department for Research.

Other application options that can be used for recruitment

In addition to the above-mentioned grant types, in which international mobility is a prerequisite, there are other foundations and grant opportunities that can be used to encourage recruitment at different stages of career levels. Examples of this include NNF Investigator, Lundbeck Fellows and ERC as well as VILLUM Foundation's grants, which can be seen below. The VILLUM Foundation also provides support for the candidate to move his or her family to Denmark.

 

 

 

Target group: The call is targeted researchers who for ten years or longer have demonstrated international, groundbreaking research of the highest scientific quality.
Mobility requirement: In order to apply for 40 million DKK, at the application time, the applicant must have been employed outside of Denmark for at least four out of the latest five years.
Academic delimitation: Natural science and technical sciences.
Grant: 40 million DKK over six years.
Application deadline: September 2022.
Processing time: About seven months.
Internal process at UCPH: To be agreed and approved by the Head of Department.
